Home Restoration: Working with electrical wiring

In Home Restoration the most common thing you will find yourself facing is electrical wiring, either because you need to make a fixture or because you are adding a new area to an existing construction. No matter the reason there are certain things you need to know when working with electrical wires and electricity in general.

First and foremost locate the electrical board of the place and make sure you set the flip-on switch of the corresponding circuit to the off position. This is very important because it will allow you to work riskless as there will be no electricity in the area where you will be working. Veteran electricians don’t mind working with live wires, but we recommend otherwise.

Also make sure that, regardless of what you plan to install, both the circuit and the flip-on switch are capable of sustaining the new charge, remember, this is very important, otherwise you will have a lot of problems the minute you connect new stuff to the outlets.

Now, once this is done, you can begin wiring, if you add outlets make sure that the cables are secured in the screws and that they don’t bend excessively when you push it in, also just peel the necessary cable to make the contact  with the screw, peeling more may pose a short circuit risk and/or break of the cable once put in place.

Make sure as well that you cable each of the screws present in the outlets, otherwise you might find yourself with a partially working outlet. If the outlet you are installing has special features like connections for other type of cabling you need to be extra careful not to make contact with the other connections or you might damage the equipment you connect to it.

Remember, working with electricity is a very delicate process either in home restoration or new installs so always, always make sure you have an expert at hand in case you have any doubts regarding your setup.
