Paint Jobs: Do the spray guns sold on tv work that good?

In paint jobs we need to use the right tools to guarantee the perfect result. This means (like we wrote last time) choosing the right tools for the job. Now, it is time to talk about spray guns. This kind of paint tool is quite useful because it allows for us to evenly paint literally any kind of surface.

Now what kind of spray gun should we choose? Well, that’s quite a question, we have all seen the infomercials for those small, electric portable spray guns that claim to be the best of their kind and the solution for the occasional and everyday painter. Well, as with everything there’s a catch.

First and foremost when we talk spray guns there’s a very important element to take into consideration: the paint itself. Let’s remember that paint has to go through a hose and then be sprayed. Now for this process to be successful, paint needs to be well thinned, a too thick paint will result in a clogged and probably damaged machine. If it is too thin, it will need more than one coating to cover the surface correctly.

And this is also critical, the paint thinning depends on the specific machine you use, and technically the instructions should tell you, but not always. In the case of the spray guns from TV we strongly recommend you look for reviews online from people who have tried them and of course from professionals who know about this topic.

As we mentioned earlier, the most common problem with this machines is that if the paint is not thin enough, they will clog, spray little to no paint and ultimately get damaged, and please, remember, this type of machines are not technically made for oil paint as the thinners used are corrosive so the machine can get damaged pretty easily.

And this is another important point to take into consideration: the type of paint you intend to use. You need to know if the spray gun you intend to use is actually designed for the type of paint you want to put into it. Most spray guns are designed to work perfectly with water-based paints, but not all are designed to work with oil-based paint. So make sure you read all instructions thoroughly before you add paint to your spray gun.

Our advice is to not use this type of spray guns, rather, get a semi-professional one, rent a compressor and get your job done, and of course, for any paint jobs you undertake, have a professional at hand.
