Paint Contractor: Know your paint and where to apply it

When you talk about home restoration and paint contractor job you talk about a job that, as we have stated before, is very delicate and needs a previous analysis before you actually begin to open the cans of paint. One of those analysis involves knowing the kind of paint you need to use for each surface so it lasts longer and looks good for the years to come.

First you need to assess what areas are to be painted indoors and what areas will be painted outdoors, why you might be asking, well because the kind of paint to use depends on this. Let´s start by differentiating the two kinds of paints there are:

  1. Water Based Paints: This kind of paint, as the name implies, are water based, meaning they are soluble in water (which is what you use to thin it during preparation) this kind of paint can be used in most surfaces (provided that they can absorb it) either indoors or outdoors.

  2. Oil Based Paints: Now this kind of paint is to be used mostly on metal surfaces and need to be thinned using solvents like thinner or similar and are water resistant. These are better for surfaces that are not absorbent.

Also, you need to determine what method are you going to use to apply it and these is chosen depending on the type of paint and the kind of surface to cover, for example, plain surfaces can be painted using either a brush or a roller, in most cases a roller is recommended as you will cover more space in less time. In rugged surfaces brush or spray gun are the choice since using a roller will not cover well and you might end with a wrecked roller in the end.

When using oil based paint for doors and other metal surfaces it is highly recommended to use a spray gun as it will guarantee a thin layer of paint and will cover every crevice which you won’t probably be able to do with a brush.

Also remember to never mix brushes and/or rollers, what you use for water based paint always use for water based paint and so for oil based paint.
